Blending Culture and Nature: ISBR Students Visit Janapada Loka and Ramadevara Betta
On July 15, 2023, a group of 42 students and 6 faculty members from ISBR College embarked on an enriching outbound learning experience to two culturally and ecologically significant destinations in Karnataka — Janapada Loka and Ramadevara Betta, both located in the Ramanagara district.
First Stop: Janapada Loka – Preserving Karnataka’s Folk Heritage
The journey began at Janapada Loka, a renowned folk museum under the Karnataka Janapada Parishat. Located along the Bangalore-Mysore highway, Janapada Loka, meaning “Folk World,” spans 15 acres and offers a deep dive into Karnataka’s vibrant rural traditions.
Students explored the museum’s many wings — including Loka Mahal, which houses over 5,000 traditional artifacts, Chitra Kuteera, Doddamane, Shilamala, and more. Curated with vision by Shri Nagegowda in 1994, the museum vividly portrays village life, rituals, tools, musical instruments, and costumes from the 1980s and earlier.
The interactive exposure gave students a profound appreciation for Karnataka’s diverse and colorful folk culture — a dimension often overlooked in mainstream education.
Second Stop: Ramadevara Betta – Trekking Through History and Nature
The second leg of the trip led the students to the scenic hills of Ramadevara Betta, just 50 kilometers from Bengaluru. Famously known as the filming location of the Bollywood classic Sholay, the hill is also recognized as India’s only Vulture Sanctuary.
Starting their trek at 1:30 PM, students ascended around 400 steps to reach a serene temple nestled amid rocky terrain. Adjacent to the temple, a small trail opened up to a breathtaking panoramic view of the landscape — offering students a peaceful break from their routine. The fresh breeze and stunning natural surroundings made the experience both refreshing and meditative.
Conclusion:
The ISBR student outbound activity was a perfect blend of experiential learning, cultural immersion, and adventure. Visits like these not only enhance academic knowledge but also promote appreciation for heritage and environment. As students return with stories etched in memory and lessons beyond books, ISBR continues to uphold its commitment to holistic education.
